Too depressing!

Here's the plot: A portrait of Argentina as seen through the eyes of Bolivian immigrant Freddy. Working as the cook at a Buenos Aires grill, Freddy must deal with everyday discrimination from his boss and customers, while struggling to earn a meager living.

I thought the Spanish was hard to understand, and although I'm all about being conscious of the troubles of this world, I don't think delving in them will help change poverty, racism and associated evils. I'd rather pick a more uplifting story to learn Spanish!

On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 1 rating.

Nathalie & Then when I sing the German
Christmas carols, I feel the awe of a little girl thinking of
Christmas all over again.

Music has a powerful effect on our emotions. I'm sure you have
songs that you connect with memories of your childhood, a past
love, or a special time in your life. It's even more powerful
when you share music with family and friends.

Getting to know the music of another culture is a great way to
connect with the people who love it. It's very foreign at first,
because you might not feel much of anything listening to that
particular type of music. The more you listen to it, though, the
more you get used to it and start appreciating it, even if you
didn't fall in love with it from the get-go.

A great way to find out more about foreign holiday songs is to
get a list of titles and then go hunt for a recording on-line.
I've found some at the iTunes store, some on YouTube, and many
on Amazon as mp3 downloads.

To give you an orientation, I'll stick to the tradition I know,
which is Christmas, but you can find just about any holiday song
with the same search strategy.

Here are a few Christmas links with songs on About.com:

GERMAN
http://german.about.com/library/blmusik_cmas.htm

FRENCH
http://french.about.com/od/christmascarols/French_Christmas_Carols_Chants_de_Nol.htm

SPANISH
http://spanish.about.com/od/christmas/tp/navidad-musica.htm
and
http://spanish.about.com/od/spanishchristmascarols/a/carols.htm

You can listen to two of my favorite Christmas songs here:

Petit Papa Noël (French)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptdy3AbXd04&feature=related

Stille Nacht (Holy Night in German)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4puLybRGSAw

And here's a very popular Spanish Christmas song:

Los peces en el río

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K8WAXEPlz8

Merry Christmas and enjoy your holidays!

© 2008 Nathalie V. I've been on both sides of this one, the laugher and the laughee, so to speak :)

Click this link to listen to the interview:

http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/18227/1h/cchannel.download.akamai.com/18227/podcast/CINCINNATI-OH/WLW-AM/081106_2_mcconnell.mp3

Sam Greenfield and Nathalie talk on WVNJ

Sam wanted to know if the audio-lingual method is effective. But his faith in the new Cuba is tested: his father, a psychiatrist, can make four times as much playing piano at a hotel for foreigners; his sweetheart, Yolanda, wants a career as a dancer and longs for the riches of Miami; his younger brother Bobby simply wants to play rock music, and as a result is in constant trouble with the authorities. When Bobby takes a shocking step of revolt and Gustavo is refused service at a foreigners-only bar, the contradictions in his resolve to become a "new man" push him to the breaking point."  Written by {jhailey@hotmail.com}

Although not exactly uplifting, the movie plays in beautiful modern Havana. The story is compelling (and true!) and gives a good picture of life in Cuba. Lots of dialog.

Easiest to understand: Dad, then Gustavo, then Yolanda. It's a little stretch to grasp everything they're saying, as articulation is not very clear, but hey, that's how they speak. I watched it once with English subtitles, then without. Knowing the story line and the content of the dialogs helps tremendously!

On a scale from 1-10 for Spanish learning, I'd give it a 7.

German Christmas Traditions... And Cookies!

Obviously, even in German-speaking countries, traditions vary
from family to family, just as in every other country. There are
a few common threads through the Christmas season though, and
I'll share a few of the things our family does that I love.

This is this week's article in "Language Learning Express:"

What Does The Holiday Spirit Feel Like Abroad?

The year-end holidays carry a particular "flavor" with them,
one that affects all senses: traditional holiday dishes,
Christmas carols (in my tradition), decorations, the Christmas
tree, smells of cinnamon and home-baked cookies, and velvety
decorations all around.

If there's one thing that I am very attached to, it's Christmas
tradition. I remember the first time I spent Christmas with my
husband's family in the United States--what a culture shock! I
thought I was pretty familiar with American culture after living
in New York City for six years. Well, I found myself completely
disoriented and feeling out of place because everything felt so
foreign and "wrong."

So if you are in a foreign country over the holidays, make it
easy on yourself and bring just one little reminder from home,
something that embodies the spirit of the holiday for you. Then
dive into what your host country has to offer!

If you're celebrating at home but would like to get a taste of
how your new country does celebrate the holidays, I'd recommend
you do three things:

1. Try a holiday recipe
2. Listen to a holiday CD
3. Participate in a holiday ritual (go to Midnight Mass, light
Hanukkah candles, etc.)

Let's focus on #1 today. I want to share my very favorite kind
of cookie recipe with you.

Haselnussplaetzchen (Hazelnut cookies)

- 250 g sugar (250 g is about 1 cup, or half a pound)
- 250 g butter
- 250 g ground hazelnuts (filberts)
- 250 g all purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup apricot or raspberry jam

In a mixing bowl, mix together butter and sugar. Add the egg.
Then add the hazelnut meal and the flour. Knead it into a compact
dough, then let it cool in the fridge for 1-2 hours. If the dough
isn't cold enough when you cut out the cookies, they end up
melting in the oven, and that's no fun! (Can you tell I've done
that?) So make sure that the dough is nice and cold before you
start rolling it out on your counter.

Cut bite-size round shapes with a cookie cutter. Bake them for 15
minutes at 175 - 195 degrees Celsius (that's 350 - 385 degrees
Fahrenheit). They should be dark brown. The darker they are, the
stronger the nutty flavor, but there's a fine line between dark
and burned. Let them cool off on a cooling rack.

Optional: dip one side of each cookie in a plate of sugar while
they're still hot. The sugar will stick to the "outside" of
the cookie.

Once they're cooled off, spread a layer of jam on half of the
cookies and stick the other half on to make a little sandwich.

A little cultural side-story: In Germany, we use a lot of
hazelnuts and almonds in our baking. They're as common as
peanuts are in the U.S. In fact, I remember how at one of the
first Christmas parties I attended in South Carolina, I reached
for a chocolate-covered cookie that looked enticing. What a shock
to my senses to discover upon my first bite that it had a peanut
butter filling! I do like peanuts, but I had never connected
Christmas with peanuts before and it might take me another twenty
years to make that connection. :)

If you're not into baking, you can get some of the German
Christmas cookies online or at specialty stores. Trader Joe's
carries my favorite kind, Lebkuchen, which is a type of ginger
cookie covered with chocolate or sugar glaze. Here are a few
pictures for your cookie orientation, and a few places to get
them!

http://www.germandeli.com/bachco.html?gclid=CNee-6DPpZcCFSAUagod
J380ow

http://www.germanfoods.org/consumer/facts/lebkuchen.cfm

My Mom always made sure that all the cookies were ready by
December 6th, which is "Nikolaustag" or St. Nicholas Day.
Typically to celebrate this, on the evening of December 5th
children set their shoes outside the window or by the door. If
they have been good, Nikolaus stops by to fill their shoes with
nuts, oranges and little presents. I don't need to tell you that
I was always very excited on Nikolaustag!

Hopefully, you've been a good girl or boy this year and can
expect some treats in your shoes on the morning of the 6th of
December!

© 2008 Nathalie V. I'm not sure how a total beginner would fare since there's no written materials.

I'll be sure to include his CD's into any of my language learning combos for future languages!

Nathalie & The dialogs were written by María del Carmen Muley, who has become a good friend of mine in the process. She has extensive experience in using the Birkenbihl Approach teaching Spanish in Germany, and was recently asked to lead a teacher training at the FH Coburg, a university in Germany. That's great news!

So for the past few months, in between her teaching and my playing with Catherine, we were on the phone discussing decoding from Spanish to English. If you are unfamiliar with "decoding," it means translating word by word into your native language.

Decoding the main vocabulary is straightforward, and I learned a great deal just doing that. Since I knew the content of the dialogs, it was easy to guess the meaning of words I didn't know yet. The tricky part is decoding expressions that just don't have an exact equivalent in English, such as "tengo que" (I need to/I have to) - it doesn't make any sense if you translate literally.

We found ways around it that work. What's interesting, too, is that new trouble spots come up with each different language pair. Since Carmen was used to decode from Spanish to German, some of the questions that came up were new to her as well.

I can only encourage you to decode all you can. I see it as an intellectual challenge that takes me deeply into the structure of the language and leads me to ask the right questions. If you are a beginner, you'd want to start by using texts that were decoded for you. The grammar will seem so clear right from the beginning that you won't experience the typical "grammar fog" I've seen on so many students' faces over the years.

Later on, though, you'll learn a lot by trying to find out what exactly a phrase like "hoy tengo ganas de ir al restaurante italiano" means and how it's put together.

We plan on publishing the course within the next month - we'll keep you posted!

Opportunities to Practice Spanish

Practicing Spanish while spending a week in Las Vegas might not be everyone's idea of fun. Since it is the closest city to where we live, we spend a good amount of time there and I probably don't associate "travel destination" with Vegas as much as people who live in other parts of the world.

I choose not to watch TV at home, so staying at a hotel gives me the opportunity to dive into pop culture every so often. This time, it also allowed me to flip through the Spanish-speaking channels and find out how much I could actually understand.

Telemundo seemed to have the most programs that I could grasp. I started out with "Laura Sin Censura" and realized that my listening comprehension skills were not ready for this level of interaction quite yet... It's a talk-show where people come to discuss their issues with each other in front of an audience and get very emotional. Being emotional usually accelerates the speed of delivery when people talk, and I found it impossible to follow.

What didn't help either is that they used a high percentage of curse words which kept being bleeped out, so that I was left with only parts of sentences, mostly delivered in tears. That didn't work. I was quite amazed that the opponents had to be held back by guards to not get at each others' throats - oh my!

I switched to another show, similar in its structure, but much more civilized, "Caso Cerrado con la Dra. Ana María Polo." Although the topics discussed were not uplifting, at least I could understand what was going on. I got used to Dra. Polo's pronunciation and very much appreciated the summaries that she gave before and after each break. I found that it was easier for me to understand women than men, I am not sure why. Maybe they articulated more. I would guess my level of comprehension was at about 70% - not bad, I thought!

Commercials are great to watch as well - I pretty much knew what they would be saying, plus they are repeated a few times. I think these were the easiest to grasp.

Meanwhile, I got to have a conversation with the housekeeping lady who didn't speak any English. She was very patient with me and made an effort to try to understand what I was saying, which I was very grateful for. This was one of the best situations - if I wanted her to understand me, I had to come out of my shell and speak. We were able to agree that I didn't need to leave the room for her to make it up and shared a little small talk.

The next opportunity arose at a restaurant where I was waiting for the food. A young Hispanic couple sat at the table next to ours and the lady was wearing maternity clothes. I asked her when she was expecting her baby and got to show my own growing tummy. There will never be a lack of topics to discuss among expecting mothers, that's for sure! It was very pleasant and we understood each other just fine.

Decoding Spanish to English

In working on our Spanish course, I spent most of last week decoding Spanish dialogs into English. (If you are unsure of what "decoding" really means, make sure you get a copy of our free e-book on our website www.SpeakEZLanguages.com - it explains it in detail.)

I should probably preface this by sharing the extent of my Spanish knowledge: I never attended a class, but spent 27 hours (yes, I counted, I wanted to know!) listening actively to the Birkenbihl Spanish course that exists for German native speakers. I did many many more hourse of passive listening, but that doesn't really count as time since I was concentrating on something else while I was playing the tapes.

Then I had a Spanish-speaking friend who wanted to keep up her Spanish and we decided to talk every morning on the phone for 30 minutes. We did that for about 6 weeks before other things started to take precedence. That was in 1999. I haven't spoken Spanish since, I just never had the need for it.

I did however pick up a book in Spanish about 5 years ago because the publisher had run out of English translations and I was determined to read it. Being eager to learn about something is very motivating!

In terms of listening to Spanish, I did get 7 years of daily exposure on the NYC subway... however, I couldn't understand most of the accents because the tapes that I had learned with were recorded by native Spaniards and sounded quite different from the Puerto Rican accent!

Back to the decoding exercise: I was happy to see that I was able to guess most of the words, primarily because I was familiar with the topics. I checked the remaining words at www.wordreference.com, which I found very helpful.

Conjugated verbs were the greatest challenge, and I was glad to find out that I could type any verb form - even without accents - into the wordreference search box, find out what the infinitive was and which person and tense I was actually dealing with - priceless!

I was thinking about how someone who has no knowledge of grammar and/or grammatical terms would go about doing this. The best I can think of is to start with a regular textbook. They all have vocabulary lists for individual chapters, as well as the grammar covered in each chapter. Since the grammar is being introduced little by little, you could figure out relatively easily how to translate verb forms into English without worrying about being faced with a subjunctive in your first lesson.

What's bothering me about that is that it will take you forever to understand the "regular" language as people speak it in everyday life. In the end, it will be more efficient to either have someone bilingual help you with decoding, or to get a text that is already decoded.

Why This Blog?

My primary reason for starting this blog is to share my perspective and experience with all the people I've met who want to be successful at learning languages. I have taught many students who believe that language learning is hard, that it will take them a long time, that it will take them years to even get anywhere.

Particularly American students are often so removed from an international community that they can’t fathom that they would ever need to speak any other language than English. So why bother?

I have two things to say about that.

1- I do believe in the power of language learning as a process of personal development. The fact that we try to understand someone speaking another language goes far beyond just understanding a foreigner. It makes us aware that we all operate from the vantage point of our own little world, expecting everyone to react as we do, since we consider it as being “normal”.

The world as we perceive it is the normal world, and anyone who doesn’t comply to its principles is “weird”, to say the least. We are judgmental, we attribute motives to someone’s seemingly incomprehensible words or actions, and we create separation. I don’t exclude myself here, as this goes on at all levels of relationships: friendships, intimate relationships, work relationships and relationships between countries.

To venture out and really put ourselves into the mind of another and see the world from another’s perspective – to literally “learn his language” is enlightening. It throws light on our own perceptions and beliefs. Hopefully it will help us understand that in the end, we all strive for the same things. I strongly believe that with every person on this planet who learns to truly master a second language, we are one step closer to peace.

2- I have taught languages for a number of years now, and I have learned – or in some cases, attempted to learn – several languages myself. Most of what I have seen as a student is not pretty. We spend a lot of time in classes, but do we really learn to communicate? As a teacher, I was often given textbooks that I was expected to use. I did my best to make it interesting, but frankly, it was often a drag. I would see the textbook and wonder “How is anyone supposed to speak after going through this? This can’t work!” And mostly, I was right.

The common, mostly unspoken, assumption that

Vocabulary + Grammar Rules + Communicative Activities = Fluency in the Language

just doesn’t work.

I am always surprised at how many language teachers are far removed from any kind of personal language learning process. I argue that “teaching someone a language” and “teaching someone how to learn a language” are vastly different concepts and need to be treated as such. With only 9% of Americans fluent in a second language, something’s just not right.

My purpose in this blog is to start learning a language myself and share my experiences. As a teacher, I know many “tricks of the trade”, but applying them myself and remembering how I feel when I don’t “get” what someone says, when I’m just lost in front of a foreign text, how much patience it takes to really start to communicate – all these things I can only experience as a language learner.

I am an advocate of the Birkenbihl Approach, about which I have written extensively, and which I studied for a few years. Most of the classes I taught have benefited from this Approach, and the students who chose to follow the steps had mind-blowing results.

You can get a short e-book outlining the Birkenbihl Approach at our website for free: www.SpeakEZLanguages.com. It’s entitled “The 7 Language Learning Secrets Your Teachers Can’t Share With You.”

Nathalie
